The Coast

The coast of Madeira is characterized by its rugged cliffs, shaped by intense volcanic activity. The steep rock formations rise impressively from the Atlantic and the dark basaltic rocks offer stunning views on the island's geological history

Fanal

The Fanal Forest on Madeira is a unique natural area known for its mystical atmosphere and ancient laurel trees. This dense, mist-shrouded forest offers hikers a variety of trails through the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Laurissilva. The combination of a humid climate and rich vegetation creates a habitat for numerous endemic plant and animal species, making the Fanal Forest an important protected area on the island.

Though it is also commonly known as the “fog forrest”, fog at this place does not appear as often as one might expect.

Levadas and back country

Madeira is known not only for its coast and lush forests but also for its impressive beauties in the back country. Away from the busy coastal areas, picturesque villages, terraced landscapes, and spectacular viewpoints reveal themselves, offering tranquility and a connection to nature. The mountainous interior of the island invites hiking through pristine nature and showcases a very different side of Madeira.
